My business journey

EARLY YEARS: In early 1990's started in events part time

  • Started DJ'ing, in early 1990's
  • Then purchasing of some event hire equipment (including pole jousts, sumo suits, surf simulators and obstacle courses etc to hire out)
  • As hire business grew, I then purchased mini marquee business.

EARLY YEARS: In early 2000's became full time self employed

  • Started up Crystal Hire, an event and catering equipment business hiring to mainly the trade (caterers and venues), sold it to current owners, it's still trading today
  • Moved more into venue management, at a wedding venue and started my own event bar and event management business alongside this. Bar events included mainly 18th birthdays, weddings, charity events and grad balls.

EARLY YEARS: In 2010's focused on event & venue management

  • Building on the success of early event and venue management roles. Took on a couple of sports venues (rugby & cricket). Started three of my longest event management contracts (now 15+ years) with Surrey County Cricket Festivals, Royal Grammar School & Guildford Beer Festival.
  • Bought a pub! Then turned it into a private hire pub, mainly hosting birthday celebrations and charity events at weekends, with meetings and funerals during the week. Sold after a couple of year to focus on the growing event and venue management roles.

NOW: Focusing on new JV's and event management

  • Working on the good event management contracts previously mentioned
  • After discovering the value of business networking started Surrey Event Professionals
  • This attracted more event and venue management contracts in Surrey, Sussex & Hants.
  • Invited to join Surrey Business Expo and then created Business in Surrey
  • Became an event partner for Surrey County Council running careers fairs
  • Decided to give back more and set up Surrey Charity Network

Some notable highlights for me

Surrey Drive

During the Covid pandemic, our industry stuffed. We couldn't also run the usual networking. Instead 40+ of our members came together during really trying times to create Surrey Drive.

At no cost to NHS, we supplied over 26,000 meals to 6 local hospitals, even had royal help we also lit the Guildford Cathedral up each Thursday for the claps!

Working at Guildford Cricket Club kept growing. I started running the old Pavilion in 2009, which led to management of the Surrey County Cricket events attracting 3-4k each time and led to my favourite contract the management of Guildford Beer Festival. And when the new venue was built I returned to implement new venue policies, procedures and grow the business. All while making life long friends.

A really enjoyable part of my work is supporting the next generation of event professionals.

This has materialised in a number of ways, through accessing live event projects, giving talks, along with many of the SEP members on their area of experience. We also work with a number of students on planning our SEP networking events, as well as assisting us on some of our event projects.

Everything has seems to lead to the launch of Surrey Event Professionals. I love this collaborative collective of event and venue professionals.

They collaborate on events, support each other when needed and celebrate the wins when they arrive. They prove time and time again the power of teamwork and good collaborations. I've also gain so many new friends

This passion project sees all sorts of charities from across Surrey and beyond meet up. They collaborate on events, knowledge share and support each other for the greater good.

I started this with my friend Paul Marcus, its free for charities to come along and benefit.

I really get joy in seeing the support exchanges and collaborations grow to the benefit of charities and the wider community

However by far the BEST part of working within industries I love and choosing to work with people and businesses I value, is the friendships.

Although initially through work, I've had the genuine pleasure of become good friends with so many people over the years.

I'm luck and this is the best part of me job in a long way.

It's not all work, work, work
